Today in human Geo we talked about situation. Situation is a location of a place relative to other paces. Situation helps us find an unfamiliar place by comparing its location with a familiar one.  For example Mr.Schick asked who has been to Florida and almost the whole class rose their hand. Then he asked who has been to Mississippi and only like 3 people rose their hand. Mr.Schick then asked one of the people what it is like in Mississippi and she said it would rain for like an hour and then be clear and then Mississippi was compared to Florida.Florida was the familiar and Mississippi was the unfamiliar place. Situation helps us understand the importance of the location.
Today in class we learned about site and situation. Site is character of a place. Examples of site is climate, water sources, topography, soil, vegetation, elevation. We talked about how Nebraska is just straight road with corn fields. Then how different it would be in Denver because it is mountains and people have to change things like how they drive because they are driving down hill. We also talked about how climate has to do a lot with an area like for example what kind of animals would live in that area. Mr. Schick also gave us a pop quiz.
Today in class we asked the key question why is each point on earth unique? A place is a unique location of a feature. A region is a area of a unique characteristics. We talked about how a town house is different then a house with a backyard. Each place on Earth is in some respects unique and in other ways similar to other places.
Today in human geo we talked about mental maps. A mental map is a persons POV perception of their area of interaction most commonly called your activity space. People's mental maps of their own immediate environments tend to be more realistic than those of places they've never visited. In class we talked about what people thought about French people. What people who have been to France think about French people vs people who have not been to France think about French people.
Today in human geo we caught up on any homework we needed to do or we did our blog because Mr.Schick had a lot to grade over the weekend and did not get to finish grading our test. Two kids in the class also have to make up the test. So, we sat quietly and did any work we needed to and Mr.Schick graded our tests and the two kids made up the test.

test

Today in class we took a test. I think I did pretty good. I studied pretty hard last night because you nobody wants to fail a test. I am really frustrated though because the last question on the first page was who is the person who writes short hand and I could not remember it so i just wrote an x and said I don't remember. I do remember now though its call a stenographer. Luckily, Mr.Shick put a really easy extra 2 point question on the back so hopefully it fills in for me not remembering stenographer. Besides that I think it was super easy and the essays were pretty easy to answer. So hopefully I did as good as I thought I did on this test!

Review in class

In todays class we reviewed for tomorrows test . Mr. Schick asked people what questions we had or questions we thought would be on the test. So, students asked questions about Socrates, A message to Garcia, and on vocabulary. Some questions I remember being asked about Socrates were questions like " what crimes did he commit?". " How did he die?". " Was he proven guilty?". People asked questions from a Message to Garcia were related to the essay like " How many copies were sold?". " How many languages was it made in?".  People also asked things about what happen in the essay like " Who was Rowan?' " Who is Garcia". People asked about the setting. The vocabulary in the essay like Agora, Polis. Someone asked if the socratic method is will be on the test. Also, what the word idiot means to the ancient greeks. We also reviewed the word Areté.

notes on Fridays class

On Friday we reviewed a few slides from the powerpoint. Then we looked at a new slide. We talked about what an idiot meant to the ancient greeks. An idiot in a Athenian democracy was someone who was characterized by self-centeredness and concerned almost exclusively with private-as opposed to public- affair. Then we learned Socrates saying " The unexamined life is not worth living."

Greek terms

Today we looked up terms and how they applied to the ancient greeks. We learned the word agora. Agora was a public open space used for assemblies and markets. Another word is polis. Polis is a city or state in ancient Greece, especially as considered in its ideal form for philosophical purpose. Then we said why the year 508 BC was important. The year 508 BC was important because its when the democracy is introduced in Athens by Cleisthenes. It was the first time they revolted against his ruler. Socrates was a classic Greek philosopher credited as one of the founders of western philosophy. He fought in the Peloponnesian war. He committed two crimes of refusing to recognise the gods acknowledged by the state and corrupting the young. He was found guilty and sentenced to a death penalty. The socratic method is when u start as a hypothesis, then set out to prove or disprove.

Excellence Notes

Today in Mr.Shicks class we looked at a power point based A message to Garcia. A Message to Garcia was what we read on Friday. I learned A Message to Garcia was a inspirational essay in March 1899. It got popular and published over 40 million copies. They even made versions in 37 languages. A Message to Garcia was made into a movie two times. The setting was the Spanish American war. The person who delivered the message was Rowan. Rowan was an army officer from West Point, class of 1881. The person the message was delivered was Garcia. Garcia was a revolutionary seeking Cuban independence from Spain. We also learned some "odd" vocabulary. Perihelion is the point when a planet is closest to the sun therefore it is at its brightest. Slipshod means careless, lackadaisical, slapdash. Imbecility means feebleness, stupidity. Stenographer is a person who takes dictation in shorthand. A missive is a letter. We then learned the word the ancient Greeks had a word for excellence calle

Five Point Action Plan

Get involved into a team or extra activities so i can meet all different people . Work really hard and use my free mods. Just mange my time and make sure I get all my school work done first and my grades always come first. In middle school i didn't always manage my time well between school work, soccer and being social. At some times school wasn't always my first priority but this year it will be and I will ask more questions, talk to teachers if needed, and be on top of my grades. Try and be social. Meet a variety of people. So try to go to sporting events, dances and just introduce myself to new people. Get more sleep. Last year again in middle school it didn't always come first. Some nights i would stay up talking to friends when I should have been asleep. This year it is a change when it is time for me to get my rest I put my phone down and turn off the laptop and sleep. I need to have enough energy to go school and learn and do my absolute best and achieve everyth

Essay

In a Message to Garica, Rowan took a long journey to get the message to Garica. Rowan asked no questions, he was told to take the letter to Garica and he did. Rowan went on a journey for three weeks to give this message to Garica. The last paragraph of this story really tied it all together and made a lot of sense to me. People should work hard, have inspiration or a drive. The message of this should is giving props to all the hard working people who do what they are told and ask no questions and just do it. A drive and a desire to succeed is a good thing to have in life. Being hard working is hard whether it comes to sports, school, or your job. You need to try and do your best and be your best at whatever you inspire to do in life.
